把死亡金属和大量古典元素结合在一起，有嘶哑的男声咆哮与歌剧女声的清唱，吉它与小提琴的对奏，风格独特魅力无限。他们自诩为“先锋交响乐/管弦乐/歌剧式金属”。

1989年,乐队自行录制了两张小样和一张4曲的迷你LP，并通过当地的唱片行销售了限量的1000张，由于销售的佳绩，很快就为Therion带来英国Peacevill Records旗下的厂牌Deaf Records的唱片签约通知。首张正式专辑《Of Darkness》于1990年的8月开始录制，并在隔年发行，这张专辑所收录的歌曲都是乐队在1987至89年间所写，因为他们认为乐队已前进至另一个方向，因而要把新歌留到下一张专辑。虽然这张专辑只有旧歌，但反应仍是非常的好，甚至让Therion成为当时瑞典最红的Death Detal乐队。
