迪士尼在2014年启动涵盖官方粉丝俱乐部网站、巡回演出与12张定名为Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection的经典原声带周年纪念发行的D23系列活动。《狮子王》电影原声带20周年纪念盘是D23系列活动的首张发行，双CD内容包含电影原声带、之前未曾发行过的30分钟电影音乐，同时邀请迪士尼动画工作室的视觉研发艺术家Lorelay Bove进行全新的美术设计包装，还有制片人Don Hahn与音乐家Hans Zimmer撰写的创作历程。
